A simple workflow for turning one long video into many shorts

4 min read · Updated

Repurposing works best as a routine. The same five steps, every time, so a recording becomes a handful of finished clips in an afternoon instead of a week.

Step 1: Choose

Skim the transcript or let a tool rank the moments, and shortlist the ones that stand on their own. Aim for a handful of strong clips rather than every possible clip.

Step 2: Cut

Trim each clip to the idea. Start just before the first word and end just after the last, on a pause where you can.

Step 3: Frame

Reframe for vertical. Centre the speaker, use a split layout for two people, or fit the whole picture over a blurred background.

Step 4: Caption and head

Add readable captions, correct the text, and give each clip a short headline that says what it’s about.

Step 5: Review and batch

Watch each clip on a phone. Fix anything off, then export them together. Keep the look consistent across the batch so your channel is recognisable.

Save your caption and headline styles once and reuse them. That is where most of the time is saved.

Where tools help

Software can find candidates, snap cuts to pauses, add captions and verify the export. Taste is yours: you decide which clips deserve to go out, and nothing here guarantees how a clip will perform.

Whatever tools you use, keep the routine short enough that you’ll actually repeat it every week. A modest process you follow consistently produces more finished clips than an elaborate one you abandon after a month.

How many clips to aim for

Quality matters more than quantity. From a long recording, a handful of clips you would be proud to post is worth more than a dozen mediocre ones. If you’re short on strong moments, that tells you something about the recording, not about the tool.

Stay organised

Name each clip by its idea rather than its timestamp, keep the source file with its exports, and note which clips you posted and when. When you look back at your analytics, that record tells you which kinds of moments worked for your audience.

Common mistakes

The time-wasters in repurposing:

  • Watching the whole recording instead of starting from a shortlist
  • Re-styling captions from scratch for every clip
  • Posting without watching the export on a phone
  • Skipping the headline, so a viewer can’t tell what the clip is about
